Happening in Cape Town township: a recycling hub for women and youths

Blue Sky Recycling is embarking on the task of upgrading their recycling hub with a new functional logistic area, designed to recycle over 10 tons of plastic per month.

Project partner Blue Sky Recycling is embarking on the task of upgrading their recycling hub with a new 60 sqm functional logistic area, designed to recycle over 10 tons of plastic per month. Main activities will include sorting, bailing, warehouse management and logistics.

The hub, running 24 hours on 3 shifts, will offer job opportunities for women and youths from the townships and informal settlements, and will provide a safe area for informal collectors to deliver recyclables.

The hub is being developed on the outdoor grounds of the House of Smiles, a shelter for women in the township of Philippi (Cape Town) founded by CORC (Community Organisation Resource Centre), Sizakuyenza and Italian NGO Cesvi.

The grounds of the House of Smiles host a variety of local organizations committed to offer support, counselling and creating jobs for people in the townships, such as Blue Sky Recycling.

Best of luck to the Blue Sky team for this new challenge, stay tuned for progress!
